Football Recruiting
Last year, the West Virginia football staff went into Ohio and scooped out two defensive prospects -- safety Mike Dorsey and linebacker Jewone Snow. This year, the Mountaineer staff, particularly offensive coordinator Jeff Mullen and safeties coach Steve Dunlap, are again invading Ohio to fill parts of the team’s future needs.
Strongsville, Ohio junior tight end Ray Hamilton grew up watching West Virginia football because his dad, Tom Hamilton, was once a Mountaineer during the 1980s. The chance of a second Hamilton playing tight end at WVU is coming full circle -- Ray’s recruiting stock is soaring through the roof right now and among the numerous pursuers is WVU, a school of which he says he has genuine interest.
After recently stepping foot on Heinz Field and meeting Pitt coach Dave Wannstedt, defensive end Sean Reaver said the Panthers definitely moved up on his list — but his top two remain the same.

Parkersburg, W.Va. offensive lineman Justin Johnson grew up a West Virginia fan, has an older brother -- Josh Jenkins -- who is a sophomore offensive guard on the Mountaineers and last week, he received a written scholarship offer from WVU. Johnson currently holds scholarship offers from WVU, Marshall and Ohio University, but he is especially interested in playing at WVU, alongside his brother.
“I’m interested in that. I really like West Virginia,” Johnson said. “I go up for almost every home game to watch my brother play. I’ve been a fan of them growing up since I was little just because I’m from West Virginia. I just like the fact that it’s close to home and it feels like home up there, too.”
Johnson is 6-foot-3, 288 pounds and plays tackle for Parkersburg High School, but is being recruited as a guard. WVU safeties coach Steve Dunlap and offensive line coach Dave Johnson are recruiting Justin for the Mountaineers.
“He still sends like a letter a week. He’s a nice guy,” Johnson said of Dunlap, adding that he is still openly considering all offers and getting use to the recruitment process.
But back in September, Parkersburg assistant coach Mark McCullough informed EERSports.com he felt Johnson was leaning towards WVU. ““To be honest with you, I expect him to commit to West Virginia,” McCullough said.
The feedback Johnson says he’s gotten from coaches is they like his aggressive playing style and how he moves his feet.
“You put the two of them side-by-side … Justin gets hit up for autographs all the time. [Johnson] is so powerful. The only difference is that when Josh got into you, he’s keep going until he kills you. He had that mean streak. When Justin gets into you he’ll just hurt you,” McCullough said. “He’s a very powerful man for only being 16.”
Justin Johnson recently attended a junior day at Ohio University and believes he’ll trip to Morgantown this Saturday for junior day at WVU, alongside Parkersburg running back Allan Wasonga, who also got a written scholarship offer from WVU, last week.
“I’m sure I’ll be with him then,” Johnson said.
Wasonga said he is planning on attending junior day at WVU and that today he received a written offer from Marshall. He expects several additional offers to arrive soon, with Michigan being among them.
