The staff here at EerSports.com hits the phones hard every day to provide the latest WVU recruiting news from coast-to-coast, and now we’re introducing a new daily feature to keep you even more closely informed on WVU recruiting: EerSports on the Recruiting Trail.
This space will be filled nightly with WVU recruiting tidbits, many of which you won’t find anywhere else!
His name has barely been mentioned in WVU recruiting coverage, but speedster Ace Sanders of Manatee High in Bradenton, Fla., has an offer from the Mountaineers and places them near the top of his list -- a list that includes 10 scholarship offers.
Sanders, a 5-7, 165-pound wide receiver, has only schools to which he’s certain he’ll take official visits, said his coach, Chris Conboy: West Virginia and South Carolina.
“They’ve done a really good job in recruiting him from the beginning,” Conboy said. “Coach [Bill] Kirelawich does a good job in the area. The kids really like him and he stays in touch.”
Sanders has offers from South Florida, Purdue, Rutgers, Lousiville, WVU, South Carolina, Indiana and a few other, smaller schools. Although downright tiny by Big East standards, he’s tough for defenders to get a grip on and strong in the lower body. The son of former Florida State player Tracy Sanders, he long-jumped 22 feet and is a three-year starter in basketball.
Sanders, who projects as a slot receiver and return man on the college level, will skip hoops this winter, instead taking official visits and figuring out where he’d like to go to college, Conboy said. He’s been to USF on several occasions and has visit Georgia, FSU and Florida, though none of those three have offered yet.
“I would think that ]WVU] will stress” how Sanders’ ability would be utilized in its offense, Conboy said. “He’s very similar to a Jock Sanders and a Noel Devine. And they’re from Florida, like he is.”
Here’s a bit of what ESPN.com/Scouts Inc says about Sanders:
“Sanders is dramatically undersized, but also dramatically sudden in his overall change-of-direction. This is a water bug that is the ultimate utility player in the spread offense that is great on screens, reverses and quick hitters that allow for him to get into space and make people miss.”
McCartney in Holding Pattern
There’s little news in the recruitment of Miramar (Fla.) wide receiver, ESPN.com’s No. 19 wide receiver in the nation and No. 113 prospect overall. Miramar coach Damon Cogdell -- who played linebacker at West Virginia in the late-90s -- did tell us that it appears to be down to West Virginia, Oregon, Florida, South Florida and Miami.
The 6-1, 162-pound pass catcher visited WVU for the Marshall game and has also been to Oregon officially. He’ll next visit Florida Nov. 28 and then will determine where else he’s going to visit, said Cogdell, who added that McCartney is unlikely to announce before signing day in February. He seems to be one of the top priorities on WVU’s board.
“Coach Holliday and JaJuan Seider have been recruiting him hard, of course they were both there when I was there. He likes them and he trusts them,” said Cogdell, who said he‘s not going to point McCartney toward WVU because he‘s a former Mountie. “It’s not hard at all [not to be biased]. I’m going to help advise, but the kids are going to decide where they want to go.”
No-Go on Louis Young?
There was talk that the commitment of Good Counsel (Md.) linebacker Tory Gloster might help the Mountaineers land his teammate and good friend, highly rated cornerback Louis Young. Young, in fact, told EerSports.com in http://eersports.com/fb-recruiting/football-recruiting-home/115-could-gloster-commit-net-eers-a-top-cb-prospect
But a source close to Young informs us that he’s cut his list to six schools, none of which is WVU: Boston College, Maryland, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Wisconsin and Iowa.
Cottrill Inks; Hoops Recruiting Done for '10?
There was no question that Poca (W.V.) point guard Noah Cottrill would sign early with the Mounties -- Cottrill, after all, seems like he committed sometime in the early 90s. Kidding, of foucrse, but it has been more than 28 months since he verballed to WVU. Now the question is, will the WVU staff sign anyone else in the early period? The smart money says yes, but we'll have to get back to you soon on that one ... Stay tuned.
