It's time for our daily dose of news from the recruiting trail. Today we bring you the latest on Josh Furman, Quinton Spain, Chris Dunkley and more ...
Furman Down to Two -- No WVU
Michigan, Virginia Tech, West Virginia and Maryland formed a final four of finalists for Josh Furman, a skilled and highly-sought linebacker for Old Mill Senior High School (Md.), but Tuesday night, EerSports.com learned WVU is no longer on Furman’s list.
We caught up with Furman back in October and he explained there were some communication issues between he and WVU defensive coordinator Jeff Casteel, who had recruited Furman early on, extending the second scholarship that Furman received, just after Maryland offered.
““I talked to coach Casteel a week ago,” he said back on Oct. 20. “I was telling him about setting up an official, but he hasn’t gotten back to me about it, so I didn’t schedule it.”
The question remained of whether or not Casteel got back in touch with Furman. “Actually, to be honest, no,” Furman said. “I think I called him the next following week and he didn’t answer, so I kind of left that alone.”
Furman continued, “We stayed in contact for the longest time. I guess I stopped answering phone calls. I got busy with school,” adding that eventually he did return calls to Casteel.
Furman pressed on and has recently trimmed his list to what appears to be a final two: Michigan or Virginia Tech.
“At that time, I was looking at the people that were coming into WVU,” he said. “I’m not saying they’re off my list, but I’m looking at Michigan and Virginia Tech.”
In fact, Furman said he already knows where he’s headed and said he would announce his destination on Dec. 19.
“I kind of came to a decision , but I’m not going to announce it until the Crab Bowl . It will be either Michigan or Virginia Tech.”
Spain an All-American
WVU will add depth in more ways than one when 6-foot-5, 330-pound offensive lineman Quinton Spain arrives on campus next fall. Spain, of Petersburg High School (Va.), was the Mountaineers first verbally-pledged player for the 2010 class, giving his commitment back on Feb. 13, due in large part to assistant coach Chris Beatty.
Last week, the U.S. Army released rosters for its annual All-American Bowl and Spain was honored with a spot on the East team.
“I’m excited to be the first one from Petersburg High School to make the Army All-American game,” said Spain, who is the only player from the state of Virginia that will participate in the game. Spain said he originally found out he had been selected for the game back in the summer. “I’m proud because I’ve been working hard all summer to get there.”
Petersburg High currently sits at 5-5 overall, but Spain is satisfied because he will get to make his first appearance in the state playoffs, which begin this Saturday.
“I’m focused on trying to be a state champion, then the Army game.”
Spain said he had not taken any official visits this fall and said no schools besides WVU sent him written scholarship offers.
Matt Elam and Ivan McCartney, two other prized pieces of the 2010 class whom WVU is actively recruiting, will play alongside Spain, in the Army All-American game. NBC Sports will broadcast the game live at noon, on Jan. 9, 2010.
Dunkley Still Favors Gators
Pahokee (Fla.) wide receiver Chris Dunkley, the No. 13 player in the nation, told EerSports.com affiliate Gator Country that he still favors Florida over Miami, West Virginia, Alabama, Michigan and USC. Dunkley has been to Miami three times unofficially and said he enjoyed his official visit to Alabama last week. WVU may be on the outside looking in here.
"I haven't heard from WVU in a little while," Pahokee coach Blaze Thompson told EerSports.com.
Nyarsuk to Make it Official
The basketball recruiting news we'd been hinting at for several weeks came to fruition Tuesday when we broke the news that Mountain State Academy (W.V.) 7-footer David Nyarsuk verball committed to West Virginia. Nyarsuk is expected to have his National Letter of Intent faxed to Morgantown on Wednesday. This is WVU's first recruit from Mountain State under new head coach Rodney Crawford, and it's safe to say the 'Eers will continue to make the Beckley school a frequent stop. We hear that sophomore wing Anthony Bennett is a possible all-American caliber prospect, and WVU knows all about hiom already.
Stay tuned for an upcoming interview with Nyarsuk.
