Snow Still Open
For some time it seemed Jewone Snow’s recruitment was nearing an end, but Snow now says he is still mulling over all his options. West Virginia and Purdue are Snow’s “favorites” for now, but a verbal commitment seems unlikely any time soon.
The 6-foot-4, 234-pound inside linebacker from Canton, Ohio made his second trip to WVU this fall to take in the Backyard Brawl. He has no other unofficial visits planned at this time, but said he wants to visit Pitt and “maybe Cincinnati, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan or maybe Tennessee.”
“I probably won’t go to all of them, but I want to pick out of those schools to go to unofficially,” said Snow.
Snow enjoyed watching the WVU-Pitt rivalry game on Friday night. “I was just there for the night of the game,” he said. “It was good. They all were excited about the win. They brought all of us inside [the locker room] after the game. I got to see what they do after the game, the cheers they do.”
WVU offensive coordinator Jeff Mullen has been recruiting Snow for the Mountaineers. Snow said he talked with both Mullen and defensive coordinator Jeff Casteel, shortly after the game.
It remains unknown when Snow may announce his commitment. “Maybe by signing day,” he said.
Pickett a Young Jock?
Pahokee High School slot back Fred Pickett is of the same stature as a current Mountaineer star and may eventually be a similar weapon in West Virginia’s evolving offensive arsenal.
“They said they’re going to try to use me like they use Jock Sanders in the slot and the backfield,” said the 5-foot-9, 158-pound Pickett.
Pahokee finished the season with a 6-3 record and lost 35-0 to Chaminade-Madonna in the first round of the playoffs, but Pickett maintained his usual form throughout the season, rushing for around 1,200 yards and 11 touchdowns, while racking up around 500 receiving yards and three touchdowns, he said.
Pickett’s recruiting is wrapped up and he is all Mountaineer. “I’m still solid with WVU,” he said. “Actually I haven’t talked to all my schools in a while. West Virginia still calls me.”
Pickett committed to WVU back in June and took an official visit to Morgantown on Sept. 12, along with a band of other gem Florida recruits. “I want to come back to West Virginia for another visit,” Pickett said.
During the offseason, Pickett says he wants to work on academics and continue to lift weights in preparation for his arrival at WVU. He will be plenty busy in the spring, running track and playing basketball for Pahokee.
“I’m really excited. I’m just ready to go on with life,” Pickett said, “ready to go to on to college and play football.”
He had a chance to catch WVU’s 19-16 win over Pitt, last Friday. “It was a close game but we stuck in there,” Pickett said.
Mahoney Visit Canceled
Last week, it appeared West Virginia was a viable destination for prized junior college defensive tackle David Mahoney, but over the weekend, that possibility may have lessened. Mahoney, 6-foot-2, 290 pounds, out of Pierce College, in Woodland Hills, Calif., was slated to take an official visit to WVU during the Pitt game.
“He didn’t go,” said Pierce College coach Efrain Martinez. “Since they didn’t take him, I’m assuming that they dropped.”
Martinez said Mahoney is expected to graduate in January and transfer in May. The WVU staff has likely backed off because Mahoney would not be able to enroll in college for the spring semester and participate in spring drills, said Martinez, who feels the Mountaineers may re-enter the picture later on. “They figured they’ll look at him later,” Martinez said. "They just figured since he’s not going to be done in mid year."
Tennessee, Texas Tech, Arizona State and Washington State are among those still actively recruiting Mahoney, Martinez said. ESPN Scouts Inc reports the same but has not yet evaluated Mahoney.Calls to Mahoney have gone unreturned.
