By now it’s no secret that West Virginia, among many other elite college football programs, is trying to establish a pipeline into the talent-laden Dwyer High School, in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. The Mountaineers currently have a verbal pledge from Dwyer corner back/receiver Robert Clark and are hot on the trail for a host of other Dwyer prospects, among them junior defensive end Curt Maggitt.
Maggitt, 6-foot-3, 194 pounds, is still wide open in his recruitment, but said he’s already been offered by Florida, Florida State, Miami, South Florida, FIU, Wisconsin, Iowa, Iowa State, Tennessee and West Virginia. It’s not surprising he’s regarded as one of the top junior prospects and has made the ESPNU 150 watch list.
WVU recruiting coordinator Doc Holliday has put the Mountaineers among the heavyweights who are actively recruiting Maggitt. “I spoke to him a few times,” Maggitt said. “He seemed cool. He offered me a scholarship. He wanted me to play for him.”
And of WVU, Maggitt said, “It’s a good school. I didn’t get to watch them much this year. I know it’s a good program.”
Clark’s potential signing with the Mountaineers may help in swaying Maggitt to Morgantown. “If Robert goes to West Virginia, I want to come up and visit him and see what it’s like,” Maggitt said, adding that he plans on taking an unofficial visit this summer to Alabama, whom offered him on Thursday.
Maggitt said Holliday has been impressed with his pressure and pursuit of the football coming off of the edge, at defensive end. He added that he can also play linebacker and said he wouldn’t mind playing either position in college.
This fall, Maggitt has kept busy starring for Dwyer and taking several unofficial visits to the likes of Miami (Fla.), Ohio State and Florida.
During the coming offseason, Maggitt plans on continuing to gain more mass and muscle, while improving the explosion in his legs with the triple jump on Dwyer’s track team.
He joins Clark, Matt Elam, Jacoby Brissett and Nick O’Leary who are all playing at Dwyer and being recruited heavily by Holliday. The group of prep stars appear to have plans in the making to stay together to play in college.
“We talk about it all the time,” Maggitt said. “That’s our plan to stay together.”
