West Virginia running backs Noel Devine and Ryan Clarke have shown what they can do, but during an hour-long scrimmage on Saturday, another Mountaineer tailback -- all 5-foot-6, 188 pounds of him -- showed legitimate potential to impact the backfield.
Miami, Fla. native Daquan Hargrett has speed. He’s got typical vision and instincts of a running back. What’s most perplexing is Hargrett harnesses an evident element of power into his running style.
Hargrett, a redshirt freshman, carried the football 13 times for 71 yards during the scrimmage. He cut, he accelerated through gaps, broke arm tackles and absorbed hits that would normally knock down other runners.
At least Clarke thought so.

It’s not hard to tell why Sunrise, Fla. outside linebacker Kent Turene has already snagged a dozen scholarship offers from Big East, Big Ten and Big XII programs. During his junior campaign at Boyd Anderson High School, the 6-foot-3, 225-pound Turene recorded an eye-opening 120 tackles, 10 sacks, two interceptions and two forced fumbles.
“I think I did pretty good,” he put it plainly.
So did a slew of recruiters.
Aggressive, a nose for the football, athletic and coachable -- Baltimore, Md. corner back Blake Countess has all the attributes that make up a prized college football prospect. As a junior, Countess helped lead Good Counsel High School (11-1) to its first league championship in school history. He shined as a force in the secondary and as a kick return specialist, then picked up 10 scholarship offers from high majors.
Harrisonburg, Va., offensive tackle Landon Turner is one of the top-rated prospects at his position for the 2011 class and already holds scholarship offers from a dozen heavy-hitter BCS-level programs. West Virginia is inserted in the sweepstakes for the heralded Turner, who already has Mountaineer bloodlines running in his family.More Articles...
