Coley White Shines in Gold-Blue Game

Noel DevineWest Virginia head coach Bill Stewart made one statement shortly after Friday night’s Gold/Blue intra-squad scrimmage that best described what to expect from the 2010 Mountaineer football team. Simple, yet clairvoyant, Stewart’s declaration revealed exactly how important the quarterback position is with this team, as it is with most any team.

“It all starts at quarterback,” Stewart said, after the Blue team won the scrimmage, 38-0. “Our quarterback is going to lead us and we’ll probably be as good as the quarterback.”

With de facto starter Geno Smith hindered throughout spring practice due to a foot injury, developing backup Coley White because of paper thin depth and incoming youth at the position became chief priority.

“He’s been written off, he’s been talked off,” Stewart vented, “he’s probably been told that he’s not ever going to be the guy.”

For Now, Coley White Standing Pat

Coley White wvuColey White has certainly arrived in an unconventional situation. He joined the West Virginia Mountaineer football team as a quarterback in 2008, paired with his older brother, Patrick, who achieved legend status during his career at WVU.

White, 6-foot, 175 pounds, was redshirted his first year and made just one appearance during a home game against Marshall, in 2009. But this year, it’s a different story for the younger White. He was supposed to make the switch to slot receiver, but because starting quarterback Geno Smith has been saddled throughout spring practice with a foot injury, White has been handed the reigns of the offense at quarterback.

'Eers Get Feisty on Day 9 of Spring Camp

WVU FootballIf toughness is what West Virginia Mountaineers head coach Bill Stewart wants to see out of his football team, then he had to be pleased with day nine of spring practice on Wednesday afternoon. Defensive line coach Bill Kirelawich, corner backs coach David Lockwood and offensive coordinator Jeff Mullen growled out instructions to their respective units, players on both sides of the ball got into several extra-curricular scuffles during a situational scrimmage and all together, the Mountaineers looked like a team that is three-fourths of the way through spring practice.

Tested WVU O-Line a "Brotherhood" of Blockers

Josh Jenkins wvuJunior left guard Josh Jenkins summed up the indispensable importance of having a battle-tested, reliable offensive line, which could be a leading part of the 2010 West Virginia Mountaineers football team. “Everything starts up front,” Jenkins said. “If you’re not getting the job done up front, you’re not going anywhere.”

NCAA Probing Possible WVU Violations Under Rodriguez

Rich RodriguezWest Virginia University officials confirmed on Tuesday that NCAA investigators have recently interviewed university officials about potential rules violations involving the Mountaineers' football program. West Virginia officials wouldn't comment on the specifics of the allegations, but a source close to the situation said the allegations center on former Mountaineers coach and current Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez.

Michigan is currently under investigation for alleged NCAA rules violations concerning the amount of time players spend on football-related activities.
